Ivan Kozhedub was a Ukrainian

pilot, who received three times

the Gold Star of Hero of the

Soviet Union, along with

Aleksandr Pokryshkin. On

February 19, 1945 he became

the only Soviet pilot to shoot

down an ME-262 (he was flying

350 meters over the Oder). He

won 62 confirmed victories,

becoming the greatest ally of

the war.

In Russian aviation more than

5000 women served as pilots,

some of whom became hunting

aces, such as Lieutenant Lilya

Litvak, with seven victories, and

Lieutenant Katya Budanova,

with six.
